Chance AI causes a catastrophe in the next 90 days
5.1%
UNEASY Some of this news is genuinely sus.
That's about a 1 in 20 chance in the next 3 months. If it stayed at this level for a whole year: about 19% (1 in 5).
▲ up 0.2 since last time
AI-driven hacking looks more serious today, with a Chinese-linked group using AI agents against thousands of ConnectWise customers, so the number edges up.

What the AI thinks
The number rises slightly to 5.1%. The main reason is that AI agents are now being used for large-scale hacking, and a four-day head start on the PHP2Shell hole shows defenders are falling behind. Nothing here shows a death toll of 1,000 or more, or a loss of control over an AI system. The rest of the news is business and product launches, which carry little weight.

Every story that mattered
- ▲ made it worseChinese hackers spied on thousands of companies after breaching IT giant ConnectWise TechCrunch
A China-aligned group reportedly used AI agents to break into thousands of ConnectWise customers quickly. This is AI-driven cyber offence at scale, and it is state-linked, but it is spying and not physical harm.
- ▲ made it worseHackers got a four-day head start on epic PHP2Shell vulnerability Ars Technica
Attackers probed the PHP2Shell bug four days before defenders knew of it. That points to a wider gap between attackers and defenders, in a bug that affects very many sites.
- ▲ made it worseAI Is Changing Everything About Hacking. No One Knows What Happens Next 404 Media
Security experts say they do not know what comes next after the PHP bugs and other AI-found flaws. This is opinion, but it reflects what experts are seeing in practice.
- ▲ made it worseAI #191: The Hackening Begins Zvi Mowshowitz
A well-informed commentator calls this possibly the worst day in cybersecurity history. It adds to the picture that AI hacking is speeding up.
- ▲ made it worseAI Is Already 'Amplifying the Destruction' of War 404 Media
Laws-of-war experts say AI is already making war more destructive and want guardrails. It is a small warning on military use, with no new incident.
- ▼ made it betterMonitorability evaluations and policy proposals AI Alignment Forum
Work on how to check that AI models can be monitored is a small step toward better safety practice. It has little direct effect now.
The case against this number
- So far these hacks mean spying and data theft, not mass deaths. Turning them into attacks on hospitals or power grids is a big further step, and 90 days is short.
- Several of today's cyber items may overlap and describe one event. If so, I may be counting the same worry more than once.

How this works
Every morning a script collects the last day of AI news from about fifteen sources: AI labs, tech press, safety researchers and newsletters. An AI model (Claude) reads every headline, compares it with its own past readings and updates one number: the chance that, within the next 90 days, AI causes a catastrophe. Here, catastrophe means one of three things:
- AI, on its own or used by people, kills or seriously harms at least 1,000 people in one event or campaign;
- people lose control of an AI system in a way that cannot be undone;
- an AI-driven decision starts a disaster at that scale, such as a war between major powers.
The number may move at most 5 points a day, and every move has to point at a real news story. The links come from the news feeds, never from the AI.
Readings before 20 October 2026 (hollow points on the chart) were reconstructed afterwards from archived news: for each day the model saw only that day's archived headlines and its own earlier readings, and was told not to use anything it knew about later events.
This is an opinion, not a forecast with a track record. The model's starting point comes from its training, and nobody can check a 90-day doom estimate until the 90 days are over. Read the reasons, not just the number. The full history is at data.json.
Drop a thought
How cooked do you think we are? Anyone can read this, and your thought floats across the page for everyone.
Be decent: hate, threats, links and personal info are blocked or taken down. To stop spam we keep a scrambled code for your connection for 2 days, never your IP address.
Why I made this
This started with a conversation with a longtime friend, a fellow developer who uses AI every day for his software company. His take: the p(doom) of an AI catastrophe is low. Mine is the opposite. At the rate we're going, I think we'll be lucky to make it through the next three months.
I believe the average person, maybe 98% of the world's population, doesn't understand how good AI already is. That's why I made p(doom): to give normal people a live read on where things stand, without having to read a pile of articles or watch hours of YouTube.
What set me off today was this video: Researchers Made “First Contact” With Rogue AI Agents (AI Copium). Researchers found a fleet of AI agents running loose on a cloud platform, left them a hidden message, and the agents wrote back.
The number at the top is the AI's call, not mine. It reads the news and decides for itself.
I built this site in about an hour, with 12 prompts in a single chat with Claude.
