How to use this comparer
Unit pricing puts different pack sizes on the same footing. For each offer, type the total price, how many containers you get (a case of 12, or 1 for a single bottle), the size of one container and any deposit or fee per container. The comparer converts everything to fluid ounces and millilitres and ranks the offers.
The cheapest offer is marked Best. The others show how much more they cost per ounce, such as +9 percent. Rows with different kinds of goods (volume against count) cannot be ranked against each other, so the first row decides which kind is compared.
A worked example
A 1.75 L bottle at $30 holds 59.2 fl oz, which is $0.507 per fl oz. A 750 ml bottle at $14 holds 25.4 fl oz, which is $0.552 per fl oz. The big bottle is Best and the small one is +9 percent.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compare bottle sizes?
Divide each price by the total volume in the same unit, such as fluid ounces. The lowest number is the cheapest. A 1.75 L bottle at $30 is $0.507 per fl oz and a 750 ml at $14 is $0.552 per fl oz, so the larger bottle is about 9 percent cheaper per ounce.
Is the bigger bottle always cheaper?
No. Sales, case discounts and distributor pricing often make a smaller size cheaper per ounce. Always compute the unit price instead of assuming.
How do deposits change the price?
A deposit or fee per container is added to the shelf price for each container you buy, so a case of 12 with a $0.10 deposit adds $1.20. Use the deposit field to compare the true cost, even if the deposit is refundable later.
What is cost per pour?
Cost per pour is the cost per ounce multiplied by the pour size. At $0.507 per fl oz, a 1.5 oz pour costs about $0.76 before waste.
How do I compare cases and singles?
Enter the case price with the number of containers, and the single price with a quantity of 1, using the same size per container. Both are converted to cost per ounce, per ml and per container.
How often do prices change?
Distributor and shelf prices can change monthly, and promotions even weekly. Re-run the comparison whenever you get a new invoice or price list. The link keeps your rows so you can update one number and share the result.
